For brand founders and product teams

Custom fragrance development, from brief to finished formula

Custom fragrance development is the process of turning a brand brief into a finished, testable fragrance formula, led by an in-house perfumer rather than chosen off a shelf. It covers the creative brief, iterative composition, sampling and testing, and support with the regulatory steps a formula needs before it reaches production. Nose & Partners runs this process for brand founders and product teams developing a signature scent, a product fragrance, or a scent for spatial diffusion.

What buyers usually ask

Do I need fragrance industry experience to commission a custom scent?

No. The brief can be as simple as a mood, a set of references, or an existing product you want the fragrance to complement. Our perfumers translate that into formal fragrance language.

How many revisions are included in the process?

Refinement continues through several rounds until the composition matches the brief. The exact number depends on how quickly a direction is agreed, which we discuss upfront.

Can the fragrance be used in more than one product format?

Often yes, a core composition can be adapted across fine fragrance, home fragrance or spatial diffusion, though some adjustment is usually needed per format.

Who this is for

Who commissions custom fragrance development

Founders launching a new fragrance product, brands wanting a signature scent for their spaces, and product teams adding scent to an existing line all start from the same question: how do you turn an idea for a smell into an actual, reliable formula. Custom fragrance development answers that with a structured process rather than trial and error.

It suits brands with a clear point of view who want something that cannot be found on a shelf, as opposed to selecting from an existing scent library, which is faster but shares compositions with other brands using the same library.

  1. 01

    Creative brief

We gather the mood, references, use case and any constraints, such as intended product format or diffusion method.

  2. 02

    First compositions

The in-house perfumer proposes initial directions based on the brief, usually more than one to compare.

  3. 03

    Refinement rounds

Feedback shapes further iterations, narrowing toward a composition that matches the brief precisely.

  4. 04

    Testing

The chosen formula is tested for stability, performance in its intended format, and consistency across batches.

  5. 05

    Regulatory support

We support the steps a formula needs before production, appropriate to how it will be sold or used.

  6. 06

    Handover to production

The finished formula moves into private label production or spatial diffusion, depending on the brief.

Before you brief us

What helps us start a fragrance brief

Fragrance development and production at Nose & Partners — Custom fragrance development
  • The mood or story the fragrance should express
  • Intended format: fine fragrance, home fragrance, cosmetics or spatial diffusion
  • Any reference fragrances you like or specifically want to avoid
  • Target market and any known regulatory context
  • Rough timeline, including any launch date the formula needs to be ready for

Timeline

How long does custom fragrance development take?

Timeline depends on how many refinement rounds the brief needs, how many stakeholders are involved in approval, and the format the fragrance is destined for. A composition intended for spatial diffusion tends to move faster than one destined for a fine fragrance product requiring full regulatory support. We agree a realistic schedule once we understand the brief.

  • Number of refinement rounds needed to match the brief
  • Number of approval stakeholders on the brand side
  • Intended format and its regulatory requirements

Regulatory support

What regulatory support looks like during development

A fragrance destined for a product sold in the EU needs to pass through the relevant cosmetics regulation, IFRA standards, and typically a safety assessment and labelling review, depending on the format. We support brands through these steps as part of development, rather than leaving them to figure out afterward.

This is support, not a certification we issue ourselves; the aim is that by the time a formula reaches production, the regulatory groundwork has already been addressed rather than discovered as a delay later.

Experience

Experience developing bespoke fragrances

Our development work with Studio des Bouvrie produced the Samsara scent collection, built around the interior design studio's own aesthetic rather than an existing library composition. That project reflects the same brief-to-formula process we run for any brand developing a fragrance that needs to feel entirely its own.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need fragrance industry experience to commission a custom scent?+

No. The brief can be as simple as a mood, a set of references, or an existing product you want the fragrance to complement. Our perfumers translate that into formal fragrance language.

How many revisions are included in the process?+

Refinement continues through several rounds until the composition matches the brief. The exact number depends on how quickly a direction is agreed, which we discuss upfront.

Can the fragrance be used in more than one product format?+

Often yes, a core composition can be adapted across fine fragrance, home fragrance or spatial diffusion, though some adjustment is usually needed per format.

What does regulatory support actually cover?+

It covers guidance through EU cosmetics regulation, IFRA standards, safety assessment and labelling requirements relevant to the product format, so the formula is ready for compliant production.

Can you match an existing fragrance I already like?+

We can use a reference as a starting direction, but the result is developed as an original composition rather than a direct copy.

Is a minimum order quantity required to develop a custom fragrance?+

Whether a given quantity is feasible depends on the product format and production process involved. We discuss this as part of the brief rather than quoting a fixed number upfront.
